Artist Statement

Artistry is about curiosity and imagination, going beyond binary choices of A or B. A connection to the Spirit helps to move forward to the next place. If there are only two choices, what is missing?  Is there a third way? Do we need more information?  What is the paradox in this question? This imaginative way of thinking opens the door to new paths.

I love creating—gardens, quilts, fabric items, and spaces for people to gather. Creating is a process of letting the spirit guide. I am writing my memoir and am fascinated with what I remember and how that leads me to the next place. When I go back to a story, I often remember a new detail. Something opened up that I had not thought of before.

Creating is discovered in the process.

A guide for discovery is to ask questions using the senses. How does it feel or sound? How does it taste or smell? How will others see this? What are the details? These questions help me experience my own feelings and often bring back something I had forgotten or not considered.

An artist is observant, open, and willing to take chances, leaning into vulnerability with humility. Open observation is not easy, but it is an honest way to find the truth, vital to writing. Truth is essential to living in a relationship with one another.
